A Ride on the Wild Side

Bicycling and Kayaking - Vancouver Island, Canada
July 25, 2008 - July 31, 2008

Join Changing Gears on our 7 day bicycle trip along the south island region of Vancouver Island and Salt Spring Island, combined with a 2 hour kayak adventure in Victoria and a whale watching trip or hiking in Port Renfrew.

BC Ferry

We will ferry over to Salt Spring Island, the largest of the Gulf Islands, where you can visit the local artists of the area. Watch for the black sheep signs that lead to home studios on the island where you can buy jewelry, sculpture, watercolors, or sweaters. We will spend the first night in the village of Ganges, the largest community on the island.

The next morning we will ferry back to Vancouver Island where we will start the portion of this ride that will take you into the wilderness of Canada. We will spend the next 2 days riding through old growth forest and along the coastline of Juan de Fuca Strait where you will be able to take in incredible ocean views. We will spend the second night near Lake Cowichan, then the third and fourth nights in Port Renfew, a quaint village of 400 people. We will be staying in a hotel over-looking the Straits of Juan de Fuca and there is a hot tub to soothe your tired muscles after your exhilarating bike ride. There will be a whale watching trip for those interested, or there are hiking trails nearby. The fifth night will be spent in Sooke and then the next morning we will bicycle on the Galloping Goose Bike Trail into Victoria. There you can enjoy Victoria's harbor by kayak. Our naturalist guide will point out otters, birds, and hopefully, a porpoise or orca, on this unique adventure. We spend the night in Victoria and the next day will be spent exploring Victoria before we ride back to Sydney for the final ferry ride home.

This bicycle ride is geared toward intermediate riders as there are hilly parts of the ride. For those who want to skip some of the hills (or would like to get to the little villages where we are staying in time to do some shopping or sight-seeing), there will be van support.

Open to men and women. Cost is $1800.00 per person based on double occupancy. Price includes all breakfasts and dinners, lodging, kayak trip, whale watching trip, ferry costs, trip map, and mechanical assistance. Limited to 10 people.
